Due to a variety of real world commitments, I have not been able to work on any site updates with any regularity.  The good news is that even though I haven’t had time to work on posts, I have been able to find some time to read and acquire new materials for the site.  I hope to have updates within the week.  I also hope to work on adding a couple of new features/resources.  I always enjoy hearing from folks who visit the site, so please send me your comments good or bad.

The Sensual Art of Masturbation

By Grace ‘M’

A note in the first few pages of this short book claims that it was originally published as “Masturbating with Style.” Unfortunately, none of my cursory web search turned up any information about the first incarnation of this book or its anonymous author.  However, based on the language Grace ‘M’ uses, e.g. “have a come”, I would guess that this was written in the early 1970s.

Grace begins by observing that women have many more options for masturbating than men do.  She also notes, “Jacking off is an alternate way of getting your rocks off, not a second rate substitute.”  She then describes her first experience masturbating (raiding her mom’s porn stash, a stash consisting of only one book).

The book continues by extolling the virtues of various masturbation techniques and aids such as dildos, vibrating crotches, and the like.  She also describes the pleasures of Ben Wa balls though she refers to them by the previously unknown (to me) name of Rin No Tama.

The next section changes gears again discusses the virtues of giving a man a handjob, explaining the differences in technique to use with the circumcised and uncircumcised penis.  Grace even gives etiquette advice about the delicate matter of cleaning up an ejaculation:

“And for god’s sake, be ready when he comes. There’s going to be a quantity of come, jism, cream, semen, whatever you want to call it, but it’s going to come shooting out of the end of his prick and it’s going to be taken care of. Now I maintain, and have ever since I first started fucking for real, that it’s the chick’s responsibility to take care of the come. After all, in a regular fuck, he’s shot it up into a chick’s pussy, and it’s her responsibility then, so why is it any more unreasonable to think that she should take care of it if she’s produced it in some other way than fucking?”

My immediate reaction to the suggestion that it was a girl’s responsibility was that I am responsible for my own aim. But after thinking about it, I agree with Grace to a point.  A girl will need to be prepared to wipe off her face (assuming, of course, you’re in a generous enough mood to let her).

I am unconvinced that a handjob counts as masturbation – to me the difference between self- and full-service is night and day.  Another thing I have wondered about is what exactly constitutes a handjob.  For example, I will always maintain that someone with two prosthetic arms cannot be the giver of a handjob.  I also maintain that if the hand belongs to a monkey you have left handjob land for bestiality.  However, I am not completely averse to considering counterarguments.

Grace meanders from the joys of masturbating a man to sharing her voyeuristic thrill in watching a group of guys masturbate, to a discussion of male masturbatory aids.  Every time I visit an adult toy store, I always wonder who comprises the market for pocket pussies and the like.  I always envision my bloated corpse being found inflagranti delicto and the subsequent photographs serving as comical, but unwanted, internet memorial to yours truly.

After more discussion about the virtues of handjobs and finger fucking combined with a lot of teasing, Grace rails against the idea that masturbation is shameful.  She then introduces a new topic: bottle fucking.

Describing her first foray into bottle fucking, Grace admits being fearful of the empty bottle becoming stuck after forming a vacuum seal, so she prepares her bottles with warm water and a cork.  If you find yourself suddenly inspired, you can find corks in the specialty bolt section of most hardware stores (you’re welcome).  I won’t spoil the book by revealing all the details other than to mention that Grace brings an unintended meaning to the slogan “Have a Coke® and a smile.”

Next Grace tells us how a man can use a wide-mouthed bottle as a masturbatory aid.  No, not as an anal stimulator, but instead by stuffing it with meat and an egg to create what is in effect a DIY pocket pussy.  The idea seems more likely to induce laughter than arousal but perhaps I am narrow-minded.

Grace also mentions the possibilities that a love doll might provide, though she admits she has no firsthand experience or observations to share.  She wraps up the book with a section devoted to group masturbation and introduces us to a device of her own construction.  The device consists of a pair of panty hose modify to have an extra pouch in a very intimate place to create a different sensation during coitus.  It seems like an idea that presages the female condom by two decades. It also reminds me of an article in Secret Magazine written by a hosiery fetishist who claimed that pantyhose are a sexy as “an ingrown toenail.” If you happen to be an ingrown toenail fetishist, please drop me a line at todd@pervertslibrary.com.  I definitely want to hear more about that.

Even though The Sensual Art of Masturbation is a little dated and meanders from topic to topic, this remains a nice treatise on the virtues and techniques of masturbation.

Update:  Since I originally posted this, I acquired a copy of the first printing of this booklet which was originally titled Masturbating with Style.  In addition to having a snazzier cover than the re-release, it includes a handful of photos and a copyright date of 1977.  While not exactly earth shattering, I wanted to mention it for completeness.

Sex In Prison

Following the standard case study format that was typical of its time, Sex in Prison is divided into two books: “Women without Men” and “Men without Women.  The bulk of the chapters consist of an “interview” with a prisoner conducted by the “psychologist” author, though there is additional text to spice up the text.  Taken as a whole, the studies serve to reinforce all the stereotypes of prisoners (and prison sex) while entertainingly adding a few new wrinkles to the standard views of prison-sex.

“Women without Men” contains three case studies.  The first case presented is Mona, a prostitute who willingly has sex with other inmates before being forced to have sex with the prison’s matron.  Next we meet Marian, a lesbian. Categorized as a juvenile delinquent, Marian grew up a neglected child and is imprisoned for the murder of her rapist.  Since this tome is devoted to prurient interests, the reader is treated to great detail of all of Marian’s trials and tribulations.  Finally, we meet Kitty, a straight nymphomaniac who reluctantly engages in lesbianism to sate her desires.

“Men without Women” begins with another juvenile delinquent, Phil.  As Phil’s tale unfolds we learn that he discovered that his sister was in a lesbian relationship with Linda.  Seeing his sister and Linda, Phil is so consumed with lust that he does the only thing logical: he begins an incestuous relationship with his sister.  Later, Phil and other members of his gang rape Linda.  Phil ultimately murders Linda because she began to talk about Phil’s relationship with his sister during the course of the rape.  What does all of this have to do with prison sex? Not much, so the chapter concludes with an aside that relieve his sexual urges during his incarceration, Phil has turned to onanism (masturbation.)

The next chapter introduces us to Albert and is probably the book’s saddest when viewed from a contemporary standpoint.  Albert is gay, the “crime” for which he is imprisoned.  As a effeminate gay man in prison, Albert endures ceaseless indignities during his imprisonment.

Charlie is presented as a misogynistic and unrepentant serial rapist.  Charlie grows up in an extraordinarily dysfunctional family.  His mother is a prostitute who and his father an alcoholic who is dependent on his wife’s income for booze.  Charlie often witnesses his mother plying her trade which fuels his hatred of women.  Charlie denies that he has any need to relieve his sexual urges, but as the chapter concludes, we learn Charlie’s and the prison donkey share a special bond the true nature of which I will leave to the reader’s imagination.

The book concludes on a rather disturbing note with the case history of Rudy.

Though the bulk of Sex in Prison has little to do with actual prison sex, the book is a interesting trip back in time and an excellent example of the faux psychology subgenre of sleaze.

Story of O

I’m not much for fiction. I know lots of folks like fiction, but time spent reading about events that didn’t happen seems like time squandered to me.

Story of O is well established as a classic work of both modern literature and erotic writing. This is fine and well, but not reason enough to make me want to read it. That the book had a substantial impact on the evolving definition of obscenity in the US and represented a significant milestone in the history of erotic publishing did not sway me to put aside my aversion to fiction and read it. What piqued my interest and made me track down a copy so that I could wallow in the promised debauchery was reading feminist critiques of the book, written before true identity of the pseudonymous author was revealed, which claimed that the contents of the book were so misogynistic that the author could only be a man.

I am sure that anyone reading the site is probably familiar with the overall plot of Story of O, so I won’t rehash it here.

Because the book was originally written as a series of letters to a lover, there is a certain discontinuity to the prose, most notably at the book’s sudden and incomplete conclusion. Depsite this, Story of O is a captivating book and deservingly one of the foundational cornerstones of modern conceptions of BDSM.

Screw the Roses, Send Me the Thorns front cover

By Philip Miller and Molly Devon
Published in 1995 by Mystic Rose Books

A friend is often fond of telling me that he was there at the moment that inspired this book’s title.  While he is generally reliable, I don’t know that there is any way to ever verify the veracity of that claim.

Screw the Roses, Send Me the Thorns is often referred to as the ideal primer for anyone newly interested in exploring an interest in BDSM.  Having read this and numerous introductory BDSM texts, I can only conclude that this book is so often recommended because it has a catchy title.  Compared to all of the other BDSM primers, this is by far the worst of the lot.

While the flow of the book is consistent with others of its type, Screw the Roses is filled with cheesy photographs and even cheesier jokes.  For example, chapter 9, devoted to flogging, is titled, “Philip’s Philosophy of Phlogging Phun.”

While using lighthearted prose to put a nervous beginner at ease with BDSM seems reasonable, rather than making the BDSM seem fun (or should it be “phun”?) the bad jokes interrupt the flow and undercut the authors’ credibility.

If one can wade past the distracting jokes, there really is lots of useful information that everyone new to BDSM play would benefit from knowing, and if this is the only primer you can locate you won’t suffer from reading it.  However, if you are choosing an introductory BDSM book, you will be better served to read Learning the Ropes by Race Bannon or Consensual Sadomasochism by William A. Henkin and Sybil Holiday.
